SITUATIONAL UPDATE
Galmudug continues to face serious humanitarian challenges, with the WASH sector being among the most severely affected. Recurrent climatic shocks—such as prolonged droughts and intermittent flooding—have caused widespread damage to water sources and sanitation infrastructures. These disruptions have heightened the vulnerability of communities, particularly those already facing hardship due to displacement and resource scarcity. The recent La Niña weather phenomenon has further worsened the situation, intensifying water shortages and contributing to new waves of displacement. This has placed additional pressure on already overstretched humanitarian services and infrastructure. Access to affected populations in remote and hard-to-reach areas remains a major obstacle, limiting the delivery of much-needed aid and compounding the crisis. In response to these growing challenges, WASH humanitarian actors and local authorities have been working to scale up interventions aimed at improving access to safe water, sanitation, and hygiene services. Efforts include the rehabilitation and construction of damaged water points, distribution of hygiene kits, and community awareness campaigns on safe hygiene practices. However, limited funding, insecurity, and logistical constraints continue to hinder the effectiveness and reach of these initiatives. Strengthened coordination, sustained support, and long-term investment in resilient WASH infrastructure are essential to mitigate the ongoing crisis and build community resilience.
