The fighting in southern Mogadishu persisted throughout the day after insurgents started to attack the base of Ugandan peacekeepers (green helmets) of the AMISOM mission near the airport. Local sources said that as time went by, Ethiopian and Somali soldiers intervened in support of the Ugandan peacekeepers, widening the scope of the battle. The entire area of 'km. 4', the main junction in the southern part of the city, and the Shirkole and Hamarjadid quarters were affected by the violence. There was equally intense fighting, featuring heavy artillery and mortars in the centre north area as well, near the Bakara market in particular. Overall, according to estimates from local media, twenty people were killed and twice as many wounded. Most of the victims were civilians killed by the crossfire, which often ends up hitting homes or shelter areas. [AB]
