Somalia: Humanitarian Snapshot (as of 13 February 2019)

There has been a slight deterioration in the food security outlook in Somalia overall, with greater deterioration in the north and portions of the center. The remainder of the country benefitted from moderate performance of the 2018 Deyr rains and the lingering effects of the abundant 2018 Gu rains. All areas benefitted from a sustained, effective humanitarian response.

Recent surveys by FSNAU and FEWSNET indicate that the overall nutrition situation in Somalia has improved due to better food security conditions, reduced outbreaks of disease and sustained humanitarian interventions. However, nearly one million children under the age of five are anticipated to be acutely malnourished in 2019, including 138,200 severely so. Urgent treatment and support is required.

The Federal Government of Somalia and aid agencies launched the 2019 Humanitarian Response Plan (HRP) on 21 January, calling on donors to provide sufficient and early funding to sustain the aid operation in Somalia. The plan seeks $1.08 billion to provide life-saving assistance and livelihood support to 3.4 million Somalis affected by conflict, climatic shocks and displacement across the country.
