Overview

Somalia is currently experiencing floods resulting from the heavy Deyr rainy season that started in October 2023. The floods have so far affected 2.5 million people, of which 1.2 million were displaced, 118 people died and led to destruction of farmland and infrastructure. An increased incidence of water and vector borne diseases, specifically Acute Watery Diarrhoea/Cholera, Malaria and Dengue Fever are reported. Nearly 3.7 million people - 22 per cent of the population - are experiencing acute food insecurity, including 2.8 million in emergency (IPC 3) and 919,000 in catastrophe (IPC 4). 1.5 million children under 5 are facing acute malnutrition.

Health cluster partners are working closely with the Ministry of Health, with support from the Somalia Disaster Management Agency at the federal level and the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management at the state level to scale up humanitarian response activities targeting flood affected communities¹. Health Cluster partners reached approximately 4.4M people with services through 57 partners. The response activities include outpatient services, routine immunizations, safe deliveries for pregnant women, antenatal care, child health and nutrition services, mental health and psychosocial services, clinical management of rape & trauma consultation.
