Somalia – Food insecurity (DG ECHO, IPC) (ECHO Daily Flash of 14 December 2022)

  • The cumulative impacts of five consecutive seasons of poor rainfall, persistent drought and conflict are expected to lead to a further deterioration of the humanitarian situation through at least mid-2023.
  • According to the latest Integrated Phase Classification (IPC) Acute Food Insecurity and Famine Risk Analysis, between January and March 2023, 6.4 million people across Somalia will face Crisis or worse (IPC Phase 3+) levels of acute food insecurity. Of these, 322,010 are expected to be in Catastrophe (IPC Phase 5).
  • Amidst a projected below average Gu rainy season between April and June 2023, and in the absence of sustained humanitarian assistance, acute food insecurity and malnutrition levels are expected to deteriorate further with approximately 8.3 million people expected to face IPC Phase 3+ levels of acute food insecurity. This includes 2.7 million people expected to be in Emergency (IPC Phase 4) and 727,100 others expected to be in Catastrophe (IPC Phase 5).
  • Famine is projected among agropastoral populations in Baidoa and Burhakaba districts of Bay region, and among Internally Displaced People (IDPs) in Baidoa town and in Mogadishu.
