Somalia - Floods, update (UN OCHA, NOAA-CPC) (ECHO Daily Flash of 15 November 2023)

  • The humanitarian impact is still increasing following the Deyr Rainy Season, impacted by the El Nino effect, and related widespread floods that have been affecting Somalia since October.

  • According to UN OCHA, as of 14 November, at least 32 people died, almost 457,000 were displaced and over 1.24 million were affected. Most of the affected people are in the Bay region, South West State (454,320 people) followed by Gedo (291,765 people) and Mudug (213,356 people). The overflow of the Juba River was registered along its entire path, while along the Shabelle River, flooding is recorded at Belet Weyne and at Balcad. Furthermore, 19 schools with 48,000 students have been hit by floods.

  • National authorities with the the assistance of humanitarian partners are scaling up assistance to those affected. For the next 48 hours, moderate to heavy rainfall is expected over the whole of Somalia, particularly across the central regions.
