Recent heavy rains in Somalia have killed four people, including three children, and affected nearly 30,000, primarily in Puntland and South West States. Marking a late start to the Gu season (April-June), the downpour has destroyed shelters, schools, water sources, and latrines, increasing the risk of waterborne diseases. Roads are impassable, and Dhobley's airstrip is non-functional. The Shabelle and Juba rivers are rising.
While these rains may replenish surface water, they won't alleviate the severe drought, as dry conditions, high temperatures, and heat stress persist in central regions. Humanitarian partners are assessing the flood impact and initiating responses but face limited capacity due to insufficient available funding. The situation compounds existing humanitarian needs from ongoing drought and conflict.
