During the week ending 22nd April 2007, the Juba and Shabelle catchments in both Somalia and Ethiopia received substantial amounts of rainfall. see table below.


The Ethiopian side of these catchments has also received heavy rains as indicated in the 7-day cumulative satellite rainfall estimate image below. Field reports have confirmed these heavy rains in the catchment with reduction towards the end of last week.

The rainfall forecast for the coming week is calling for moderate to heavy rains in Somalia especially in the Juba catchment with light rains in the Ethiopian catchments.

Given the heavy rains in the Ethiopian highlands, there is moderate level risk for flooding in the Shabelle River.
