The latest released Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) analysis shows that food insecurity and malnutrition rates in Somalia are expected to rapidly deteriorate by the end of March 2026, with 6.5 million people facing high levels of hunger and more than 1.8 million children affected by acute malnutrition.
The country’s food security situation is worsening because of the current prolonged drought, water shortages, insecurity, conflict and historically low levels of humanitarian assistance due to global funding cuts.
While Gu rains (April-June) may bring some respite, 5.5 million Somalis are expected to remain in Crisis or worse levels of food insecurity (IPC 3 and 4) until June 2026, including 1.6 million people in Emergency levels (IPC 4).
The EU and its Member States are the main humanitarian donor to the humanitarian response in Somalia. Funding is allocated to prioritised lifesaving interventions in the most severely drought and conflict affected districts, providing essential health, nutrition, emergency cash assistance, WASH and protection to the most vulnerable families.
