SITUATION OVERVIEW

Partners have stepped up assistance as an uneasy calm is reported in Hiraan Region (Hirshabelle State) and Gedo Region (Jubaland State), following two months of conflict that displaced at least 100,000 people, according to humanitarian partners and local authorities. Reports from Belet Xaawo in Gedo Region indicate that conflict has eased although the situation remains unpredictable, allowing some local residents to cautiously return to their homes. Some essential services—including telecom networks, electricity, water supply, markets, and public transportation—have resumed operations. On 30 July, the Jubaland State Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management appealed for urgent assistance to 7,149 households (over 42,800 people) affected by the conflict, in particular the provision of clean water, establishment of a temporary health clinic, distribution of food aid, provision of safe and adequate shelter, adequate sanitation facilities and protection services. According to Protection Cluster partners, clashes in late July affected over 38,000 people in Belet Xaawo, displacing about 28,000 to nearby areas and 10,200 to Mandera, Kenya.

In Mahas town and other districts of Hiraan Region, the recent conflict has led to the suspension of services in 13 health facilities under the Damal Caafimaad project. Insecurity has also forced the temporary closure of one stabilization center and seven community health sites. Reportedly, affected people require urgent shelter assistance, food, water, healthcare, and protection. Since June, an estimated 62,000 people have been displaced in Hiraan, including 36,000 who fled from Moqokori town and nearby areas to Belet Weyne, 14,300 to Bulo Burto, and 10,500 to Jalalaqsi districts. On 26 July, clashes intensified in Mahas, displacing approximately 22,800 people to Belet Weyne and Bulo Burto districts, and other locations.
