Situational Update
The ongoing El Niño rains have triggered flooding, particularly in Gedo region, while Bay, Hirshabelle, and other regions are also experiencing above-average rainfall, resulting in floods and an increased risk of flooding. According to PRMN 63% of those either displaced or affected by the floods are children. The floods have also destroyed homes, schools and road networks include major bridges, cutting children and their families from accessing essential services while some remain stranded, waiting to be evacuated to higher ground. Populations in the affected districts continue to be hit by multiple shocks including conflict, beyond the immediate risks of death and injury, the floods pose a severe risk to children’s health and safety. With damaged sanitation facilities, compromised safe water supplies, the chance of diarrhoea and cholera outbreaks, as well as dehydration and malnutrition, increase significantly. Meanwhile, children who lose their parents or become separated from their families are more exposed to protection risks, including violence and exploitation .
-
We’re actively monitoring forecasts and potential risks across regions/ districts and working with partners to help communities anticipate, prepare for and prevent the worst possible humanitarian impacts.
-
We’re supporting communities to access early warning information so that they can take preventative measures.
For example, sharing messaging with families on how to reach safe spaces in time ahead of flooding, etc. -
We’re ensuring access to essential services − such as healthcare facilities, schools and child protection services
-
We’re working with WASH, Food Security, Shelter, CCCM and Health clusters to enhance child child protection through integrated response.
