Somalia: 2025 Gu (April to June) Seasonal Floods -Situation Report No. 1 (as of 20 May 2025)

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Humanitarian partners, the Somali Government and local communities have stepped up to assist thousands of people affected by flash floods in several areas.

  • At least 84,000 people have been affected, with at least 17 killed due to heavy rains and flooding. Widespread Infrastructure damage is reported, hindering access to people in need.

  • On 12 May, flooding affected several areas in Jowhar district including displacement sites, impacting about 16,200 displaced people and damaging shelters.

  • A general reduction in rainfall is forecasted in the coming days. Dry conditions are projected to persist in parts of Puntland, Somaliland, Mudug and Middle Juba.

  • The flooding comes at a time when aid operations are constrained by severe funding cuts. The 2025 Humanitarian Needs and Response Plan is only 11 per cent funded.
