Family Hygiene Kit Distributions
On 23 March 2013, the CTC Programme received supplies to resume distributing family hygiene kits to cases discharged cured from OTP. Cases discharged cured from OTP are admitted into SFP for another two months of follow-up. Providing the kits at the time of OTP discharge provides an additional incentive to the mother to keep her child in OTP until the child is cured, and helps ensure the child be registered into the SFP for follow up.
The hygiene kits consist of a 20 litre plastic bucket, a collapsible jerry can, soap and a 3-month supply of Aquatabs. Since supplies were received, 2325 kits have been distributed across all 17 clinics.
Introduction of the Pentavalent Vaccine
After extensive training and preparation provided by the Ministry of Health, UNICEF and WHO from February through April, SAACID began administering the new Pentavalent Vaccine across all 17 MCHN clinics on 24 April 2013. In addition to protecting children against diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis (diseases addressed by the DPT vaccine administered to date), this new vaccine also protects against hepatitis B and Hib (Heamophilus influenza).
