The aim of the initiative is to strengthen governance systems and inclusion of displaced people in decision-making, while also providing access to services, housing and livelihood opportunities An innovative durable solutions project for internally displaced people and returnees in Mogadishu was launched on 29 May, by the Municipality of Mogadishu and the Minister of Planning, Jamal Mohamed Hussein. The €12 million project is part of the EU RE-INTEG programme and will substantially improve living conditions of IDPs and refugee returnees through the establishment of governance systems and by increased housing, land and property rights and social, economic and political inclusion for displaced people.

Strengthening governance and improving lives of displaced people
The aim of the initiative is to strengthen governance systems and inclusion of displaced people in decision-making, while also providing access to services, housing and livelihood opportunities. The action will be implemented by a UN-Habitat-led consortium consisting of UNDP, UNHCR, SWDC, CESVI and SIDO, and under the guidance and leadership of the Benadir Regional Administration.
Background
The RE-INTEG Project for Mogadishu is funded by the EU Emergency Trust Fund for Africa and contributes to the implementation of the Durable Solutions Initiative for the Displaced in Somalia, supported by the Federal Government and the United Nations Deputy Special Representative for Humanitarian Affairs and Resident Coordinator in Somalia.
With its Member States, the EU is Somalia's main development partner and provides more than half of all assistance to the country.
