Brief Analysis
Calls to Radio Ergo's audience feedback platform this week (20-26 July 2023) indicate ongoing concerns among communities in different parts of the country about the levels of consistent rainfall they are receiving or should expect. There were a large number of calls from people across the regions announcing and celebrating rainfall, but at the same time several calls about water shortage and continuing drought. Other callers had questions on farming and livestock for experts collaborating with Radio Ergo programmes. The following summarises the calls by theme.
Agriculture -- a farmer in Galkayo said they wanted to profit from the rainy season but needed seeds to be able to plant any crops or other produce. Another farmer in Dusamareb said they needed equipment for cultivation. Also in Dusamareb, a female caller said they had dug a well but needed a generator to access the water.
Locusts -- two callers in Sanag complained about locust attacks. A caller in Saqayub area said they need aid agencies to spray the insects. A caller in Badhan said they were concerned about locusts, as well as drought and water shortage. He added that their livestock were struggling.
IDPs, Health -- an IDP caller in Bardera, Gedo, said they needed aid in the camps. A female caller in an unspecified location in south central said they were internally displaced and faced shortage of food, water, and fodder. A caller in Gedo region said many people were suffering from stomach pains and they wanted to identify the cause. A caller elsewhere said they had no health clinic in their area for mothers and children.
Rainfall -- two callers in Salahley, Marodi Jeh, said their livestock were recovering and gaining wait after rainfall. Among several Togdher callers, one said they were now harvesting produce after the rain. Another in Odweyne said they were previously displaced by drought but after rainfall their livestock were now recovering. In Puntland, two callers in Karkar said they were getting good rain and their livestock were producing milk. Callers in several parts of Galgadud reported rainfall in their areas after a long dry season. Two callers in Guriel said they hoped they would get more rainfall. A few callers in southern regions reported rainfall, although a caller in Kismayo said it was little and their livestock needed more rain to recover.
WASH -- two callers in Aroweyn in Badhan, Sanag, said they were facing drought and needed help. A female caller there said their livestock were dying. Several callers in Puntland's Bari region spoke of high temperatures and dry weather. One in Bosaso said their livestock lacked water and fodder. Two callers in Garowe said they had not had rain recently and were struggling. A caller in Mudug said some people have left the area due to heat and drought. A caller in Dusamareb appealed for water aid. A caller in Middle Shabelle said they were facing water shortage and generators had broken so they could not access well water. Several people called from Bardera and Dollow in Gedo about drought and water shortage. Callers in Bardera said it was hot and they had not had the rainfall they expected.
