Brief analysis

In this week’s batch of calls (10-16 July 2025) recorded on Radio Ergo’s nationwide audience feedback platform, a number of callers - especially from northern regions and some from central areas - complained of continuing drought and the impact of water shortage, with some of them appealing for help. However, a bigger number of callers spoke of beneficial rainfall, mostly from central and southern regions. Some regions or districts generated calls about both dry and rainy conditions in different locations. The following summarises the calls by theme.

IDPs – a caller in Landher, Galgadud region, said IDPs in the camp faced food shortage and were appealing for help.

Education – a caller in Gelinsor, Galgadud, said there were no education centres in the area and they wanted the regional and federal governments to help them establish schools.

Nutrition – several called asking questions about symptoms and treatment for malnutrition in children and the elderly.

Climate – climatic changes continued to be of high interest and concern, with some callers asking again for more Weather Forecasts to be shared with listeners.Callers in Sahil in the north and Burhakaba in the south described very hot temperatures. A caller in Tiyeglow, Bakool region, said they were being affected by very strong winds and may need help from aid organisations (presumably due to damage to shelters).

Drought and water shortage – a female caller in Awdal, western Somaliland, said they faced drought and water shortage and hadn’t had rainfall. A caller in Gabiley said they lacked water. Among several in Sanag region, a caller in Badhan said the drought was severe and another in Erigabo said people and livestock were suffering and needed help. Among calls from Puntland, a caller in Isku-shuban in Bari region said there hadn’t been any rain and the water catchments were empty. Another in Godobjiran, Nugal region, said they were praying for rain to end the prolonged drought and water shortage in the area. Several called from Galgadud about drought and one also from Hiran. A caller in Bardera, Gedo region, said they hadn’t had rainfall recently and that water received in the Gu seasonal rains had been depleted.

Rainfall – a few callers in Togdher region said they were having rain although one said it was little. Many across parts of Galmudug mentioned rainfall that was helping crops and livestock improve, although a couple indicated that the rain was light. Similarly, quite a few called from Hiran, Middle Shabelle, and Bay regions mentioning beneficial rain. A female caller in Beletweyne said they had rain and crops were growing, but not prolifically. Among several callers in Gedo, a farm worker in Bardera attested that they had rainfall and the crops he was tending were doing well. Another in Bardera said they had planted on 15th July and were now praying for good rainfall.

Agriculture – among calls to the radio’s weekly farming programme, a caller in Wanleweyn said they need maize and sesame seeds to grow. A caller in Banadir wanted access to banana seeds to cultivate.
