Brief Analysis
Most callers who recorded messages on the Radio Ergo feedback platform during the week 7-13 May 2025 talked about rainfall in their areas and the improvements the rain had brought to their livestock and farms. Some said they had received a lot of rain, although others mentioned that it was less than anticipated. The bulk of these calls came from across Galgadud, Hirshabelle regions, and Gedo. A smaller number of callers notably from the north complained of continuing drought and its harsh impact. Many callers wanted help and advice with sick livestock, whilst farmers wanted help with pests attacking their crops. The following summarises the calls by theme.
Aid – a caller in Bardera, Gedo region, claimed that aid organisations were selling medicines and nutritional supplements in the area, and he wanted his message to be heard.
Education – a female caller in an unspecified location in Puntland said the rainfall was helping them, although their children had no access to education because there were no schools in the area. She added that they needed schools to be established.
Floods – a caller in Borama, Somaliland’s Awdal region, said there were floods in the area due to recent heavy rainfall. He wanted his message shared with the authorities. In Hiran region, a female caller wanted the weather experts to give information about the likelihood of river floods occurring there.
Drought – a caller in Sanag region complained of widespread drought that had affected their camels and goats. He said the pastoralists were not able to cross to the Somaliland side because the borders had been closed. He said they needed the Puntland government to help them. A caller in Lasanod said they hadn’t had any rain and they wanted information from the weather experts about when they could expect rain. A caller in Taleh, Sool, said they hadn’t had any rainfall recently because of the rampant deforestation. He said people needed to plant trees. In Bosaso, a female caller said it was very windy but they had no rain. Callers in some other unspecified locations said they had lost donkeys due to the drought, and that farm production had been affected.
Livestock – calls about livestock diseases came from across the regions. For instance, a female caller in Badhan, Sanag region, said they wanted to know how to treat their sheep that were sick with diarrhoea. A caller in Adado, Galgadud, said their livestock had CCPP and cowpox diseases and he wanted to know the causes and how to treat them. A female caller in a rural part of Guriel said their goats were sick and dying and she needed urgent help. A caller in Lower Shabelle said their camels had swollen bodies and he wanted treatment advice. Another in Dinsor, Bay region, wanted advice on how to help their camels that he said were very thin.
Rainfall – in Somaliland, two callers said they had had a lot of rain in El-Afweyne and were doing well. A caller in Qardho, Bari region, encouraged others to move to the area where he said they had received rainfall and the livestock were doing well. In Galgadud, several called from Adado saying they had rain and were happy, although one noted that the rain was little. In Abudwak, one caller said there had been some thunderstorms and heavy rain near the town. Others noted rain in Guriel and Dooley and said livestock were getting pasture and water. Among callers from Hiran, a caller in Beletweyne said their crops were growing well now, although another said that after the rain they were plagued by mosquitoes. In Balad, Middle Shabelle, one caller said they had had rainfall for five consecutive days and the farmers were working hard and feeling blessed, as the river was also at a good level. Another in Balad said their camels and cows were in good health. Several called from Wanleweyn, Lower Shabelle, saying they had rain and the farmers were at work. Several called from Bardera, Gedo region, including one who said their camels were doing well as they had received rainfall, and their crops were also growing.
