Brief Analysis

There was an increase in the number of calls about drought this week (5-11 June 2025), with callers to Radio Ergo’s audience feedback platform citing a lack or inadequacy of rainfall this season in northern regions Togdher and Sanag, Mudug, and also Gedo. On the other hand, callers notably in Galgadud and Hirshabelle areas spoke of their farms and livestock doing well with rainfall in their areas. There were several calls from IDPs asking for aid. The following summarises the calls by theme.

IDPs – a caller saying he spoke for IDPs in a camp in Baidoa complained that meat donated to the community had been grabbed by people who were selling it. He didn’t say who was donating the meat but wanted to share his concern. A caller from Dayacan camp in Abudwak said many of the families were poor and were appealing for humanitarian aid. A caller in Bardera, Gedo, said he was a humanitarian volunteer who had visited Iftin camp north of Bardera, where many IDPs faced lack of shelter. He wanted his message shared with aid agencies for response.

Health - a caller in Baidoa said there were mosquitoes everywhere and they needed help in treating cases of malaria. Several called on the topic of Nutrition, including a female caller who said the young children had succumbed to malnutrition because of poverty since the parents couldn’t afford to buy nutritious food for the children.

Floods – one caller in Baidoa said they had been affected by river flooding.

Weather forecasts – two callers in Togdher region said people wanted more weather information on the radio, especially the pastoralists facing the dry season.

Livestock – among those calling the livestock programme, a caller in Badhan, Sanag said their livestock were being vaccinated against cowpox and CCPP disease, but not against the many other diseases. He called for modern veterinary services to vaccinate and treat the livestock.

Agriculture – many called the farming programme for advice about pests and other issues. A caller in Daifo, Middle Shabelle region, said their crops had dried up following earlier floods that had inundated the farms. He wanted advice and information on how to overcome this challenge.

Drought & water shortage – in Togdher region, a caller in Beer said the area was in drought as they didn’t get much rain in the region. He added that the heat was intense and there was a water shortage. In Sanag region, two callers in Badhan said they needed help due to the drought and lack of water. Others in Sanag said people had migrated with their livestock in search of water and fodder due to drought, and that the rain had been little this year and last year. In Mudug, callers from Gashan, Galkayo, and Bali-busle said the ‘gu rains this year had failed or had been very little. They said the drought was severe and prolonged. In Gedo region, a caller in Qarsoni said the rainfall had been little and they were facing drought. He added that there had been no aid agencies in the area for the last two years. Others in Iidole and Bardera also reported drought returning after a little rainfall.

Rainfall – in Sanag region, one caller in Haylan said they had rainfall and many people were moving there with their livestock. In Galmudug, several female callers in Guriel said they had good rainfall and another in Bandiradley too. Several noted good rain in Hiran, including in Beletweyne and Buloburte. Several called from M.Shabelle including Jowhar, Adale, and Balano saying their livestock were in good condition and farms were also doing well. A caller in Middle Juba said their farms were growing well and the reservoirs had been filled with water by the rain.
