Brief Analysis
Calls to the Radio Ergo audience feedback platform this week (21-25 November 2024) indicated an ongoing mixed pattern of weather. Callers notably in Sanag, Bari, and Galgadud regions reported rain, while callers in some other areas noted severe drought and water shortage impacting their livelihoods. (There were fewer calls over this period as the call-in platform was offline for a while due to technical problems). The following summarises the calls by theme.
Floods – a caller in Hirshabelle said they were concerned about the floods caused by the Shabelle river and were appealing for help. In Sool region, a caller identifying himself as a pastoralist herding camels said heavy rainfall had swept away some of their younger camels. He added that there were also outbreaks of diseases affecting people in the area.
Drought and water shortage – a caller in Higlale, Togdher region, said people were facing water shortage in the area. He added that they also needed education centres. A female caller saying she was a pastoralist in Adado, Galgadud, complained that they hadn’t had rainfall and their goats were becoming weak. A caller in Guriel said they were facing water shortage and high temperatures having had little rain. In Hiran region, a caller in Ferfer said they were facing severe drought in the area and were appealing for aid. A caller in El-Ali Mire [Hiran?] said they were facing increased heat and their livestock were struggling. Pastoralists had migrated to his area and depleted all the water and fodder after a limited amount of rainfall. He wanted his message to be shared so that the government and aid organisations could help them. In Bay region, a caller from Wareysh near Burhakaba said farmers had reaped poor harvests as the rainfall had been sparse.
Rainfall – several callers in Sanag region said they were receiving good rainfall. One in Badhan said they were still getting heavy rainfall in the area and had recovered from the drought that had displaced people. A caller in El-Afweyn said rainfall had begun overnight on 23 November and they were doing well. He hoped other regions would also get rain. Among callers in Puntland’s Bari region, a female in Bosaso said they were doing well having had rainfall that brought cooler temperatures. Two female callers in Mareer also noted beneficial rainfall. In Karkar, one caller said there was water everywhere following continued rainfall that started at 9:00 am on 22 November. However, another said the rainfall they had over the past two days had now stopped. A number of callers in parts of Galgadud mentioned rain, including four in Guriel and one in Goldogob. They generally indicated an improvement of conditions, although one caller said the rain had been little. Further south, callers in parts of Middle and Lower Shabelle said they had received welcome rainfall. A caller in Baidoa said after the rain their livestock were improving and their crops were growing well.
Environment – Radio Ergo’s programmes on climate change and environmental issues provoked discussion among listeners. A caller in Burao, Togdher, challenged how plastic bag waste could be harmful to the environment, saying that the bags were small and could be carried away by the wind. Another wanted to know if the more extreme heat and cold experienced on occasions in Togdher region were signs of climate change. Others wanted more information about the relationship between deforestation and climate change, and how to mitigate the effects of climate change.
Jobs – a male caller in Mogadishu complained about unemployment facing the youth and asked the government to create job opportunities for people.
