Oxfam Urges Immediate Response to Somalia’s Complex Humanitarian Challenges

MOGADISHU, Somalia – In a reaction to the UN Humanitarian Needs Response Plan (HRP) published today revealing that nearly 6 million people in Somalia require urgent humanitarian assistance in the country, Oxfam Country Director Juliet Moriku Balikowa said;

“Despite a slight improvement in overall humanitarian needs over the last year, the crisis in Somalia remains dire. Conflict and climate disasters continue to devastate the country, displacing over 3 million people and increasing vulnerabilities across all populations. With 2025 rainfall projected at less than 65% of normal levels, pastoralists and farmers are facing yet the possibility of another destructive drought.”

“Despite the concerted effort of all humanitarian partners and government over the years, a scaled up integrated multi-sectoral response in Somalia remains critical. Devastating floods in 2023 coming at the tail end of a severe drought significantly slowed down recovery in 2024, leading to many Somalis remaining in poverty. Another crisis will push people to the brink again."

“We need more than short-term solutions to address these complex challenges and improve livelihoods. Long term flexible funding is urgently required to address the urgent needs, along with long-term investments in climate adaptation and mitigation, sustainable livelihoods, and peacebuilding and development".
