OIC Secretary General expresses deep concern on the recent increased fighting in Somalia

The OIC Secretary General Prof .Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, has expressed his deep concern on the recent increased fighting in Somalia. He strongly condemned the ongoing attacks against the Transitional Federal Government (TFG), the Africa Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) and the innocent Somali people by armed groups.

The Secretary General called on all Somali parties to cease fire during the last ten days of the holy month of Ramadan in line with the values embodied by the fasting month, notably the rejection of violence and the promotion of tolerance and reconciliation.

The Secretary General restated the commitment of the OIC as an Observer under the Djibouti Agreement to fully support the Transitional Federal Government in Somalia and contribute to the alleviation of the worsening humanitarian situation in the country. He called upon the international community to provide additional resources to AMISOM to enable it to better fulfil its mandate in the country as well as well as to extend the necessary support to build the capacity of the Somali security forces.

The Secretary General reiterated the OIC's commitment to maintain its efforts through its cooperation with the international community and the mobilization of its Member States to assist the Somali Government to face the current immediate challenges.
