OCHA Somalia - Humanitarian Access Update 01, 30 August 2012

The month of August saw a relative decrease in incidents affecting humanitarian access. Despite the Al Shabaab (AS) threat of attacks, Ramadan and the Eid holiday remained quiet.

The on-going military operations in South-central Somalia saw the capture of Merka on 27 August. In the course of their retreat AS assassinated an FAO national staff member along with other civilians.

Continued fighting in the South continued to raise concerns for the protection of civilians, as increasing number of people started leaving Kismaayo.
