Key Highlights

Deepening Drought Crisis: Poor Deyr rains and La Niña conditions are exacerbating a severe drought in across the country, leading to critical water shortages, widespread food insecurity, and school closures. Nomadic communities are disproportionately affected. The drought displaced 8,268 people in January alone, and 12,000 in the preceding three months (primarily in Hiraan, Galmudug, and Gedo regions).

Widespread Food Insecurity: At least 4.4 million people are facing acute food insecurity, with projections indicating that 1.6 million children will suffer from acute malnutrition by mid-2025.

Conflict-Driven Displacement: Rising conflict and insecurity continue to displace thousands. Between November 2024 and January 2025, over 100,000 people were displaced across Hiraan, Lower Juba, Gedo, Lower Shabelle, Sanaag, Bari, Mudug, and Togdheer. In January 2025 alone 20,489 were displaced due to conflict. Total displacement for January, including drought and conflict, reached 30,215.

Forced Evictions: 29 eviction cases in January 2025 impacted 4,956 households (29,736 individuals) across South Central and Jubbaland. Affected populations were evicted from Baidoa, Hudur, Jowhar, Kismayo, Daynile, Garasbaaleey, Hodan, Karaan, and Kahda.

The USG funding freeze: The funding freeze has forced NRC to suspend a vital durable solutions programme, which provided rental subsidies and livelihood support to 500 displaced households, now jeopardizing their integration into host communities.

NRC Response and Impact: In January 2025, NRC Somalia provided critical assistance to 85,659 individuals. This included: Multi-Purpose Cash Assistance (MPCA) and food assistance; Livelihood and agricultural support; Education-in-emergency interventions; Shelter and Non-Food Item (NFI) distribution and Legal aid for housing and land rights. These efforts focused on immediate relief, promoting durable solutions, and building community resilience.
