Mogadishu (dpa) - Nine people were killed and 11 wounded Friday when gunmen ambushed a convoy carrying food relief to a famine-stricken area in central Somalia, according to reports from the scene.
The nearly 60 armed men opened fire on the CARE International convoy in Buqdah village, about 290 kilometres north of Mogadishu. Local militiamen returned fire, eyewitnesses reported.
Five security guards escorting the convoy and four villagers were reported killed in the clash.
The convoy had been carrying maize and cooking oil donated by CARE International to the Tieglow district of Bakol region where serious famine had been reported. dpa ow vc
