Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI)
Absolute difference w.r.t. previous year (Act. – Prev.)
Period: December 2006
Dekad: I
Highlights
Rainfall
Close to average rainfall was modelled by ECMWF for this dekad. However, October and November rainfall was clearly above average in most areas of the country, leading to heavy floods in the riverine areas.
Crops
Greenness of Deyr vegetation is extremely high in Bay, Bakool and the Shabelle regions following the abundant rainfall of the previous dekads. Unfortunately the elevated vegetation index values do not reflect a positive crop development due to large flooded areas and crops damaged by heavy rain. Only areas far from rivers or crops planted after the heavy rainfall are expected to produce well.
In general, 2006 Gu crops were below average for the Shabelle regions, close to average for Bakool and above average for the high potential sorghum areas of Bay.
