(02/03/2017) In Africa, a hunger crisis is unfolding of even greater proportions than the one of 2010/2011 in the Horn of Africa. Welthungerhilfe is therefore providing 500,000 euros of emergency aid to help the victims of the drought. The money will be used for emergency assistance measures in Ethiopia, Kenya and Somaliland. These three countries in the Horn of Africa are currently suffering a severe drought that is threatening the lives of more than 11 million people. According to UN figures, more than 20 million people in Africa are dependent on humanitarian assistance for survival.
“Unfortunately, the international community is responding very reluctantly. People don't have any reserves left, as in recent years their harvests have failed and animals died because of the lack of water and fodder. Every donation helps us save lives,” emphasises Till Wahnbaeck, Welthungerhilfe chief executive officer.
Welthungerhilfe is supplying urgently needed drinking water to the affected villages. At the same time, children, pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers are receiving food, which is sufficient for at least one meal a day. Animals belonging to livestock herders are also being provided with water and fodder, as they are often the families' only source of income. Many goats and cows have already perished or are so emaciated that the herders can no longer sell them.
