FSAU Focus - Deyr 2000/01 crop harvest in southern Somalia Issue 2/2001 - March

Attachments

Background
This Focus has been divided into two main sections. The analytical approach of the first one is based on the total annual cereal production (Gu and Deyr) (p. 1-3) while the second section concentrates on the results of the Deyr season only.

Following the Deyr crop establishment assessment conducted in late November, data was compiled, discussed and analyzed in Nairobi early December. Field work was again carried out by FSAU at the end of January during harvest time. The Deyr 2000/2001 crop harvest assessment workshop was held in Baidoa in early February. The results were discussed and a consensus was reached regarding the final harvest assessment. Though the production figures mentioned in this report are certainly the most appropriate available for Somalia at the moment, it is worth noting that they are based on judgment and experience rather than accurate measurements in the field. (The results of the Gu 2000 crop harvest workshop held in Mandera last September were published in a Focus-Issue 5-Oct. 2000).
