Solomon Islands: A PNG provincial government donates funds to tsunami

The East New Britain Provincial Government in Papua New Guinea has donated a sum of K5, 000.00 towards the Tsunami Relief Assistance in Solomon Islands.

Governor of East New Britain Provincial Government and Regional Member for East New Britain Province in the Papua New Guinea National Parliament, Hon Leo Dion, made the presentation to the Solomon Islands High Commissioner to Papua New Guinea, HE Mr Bernard Bata'anisia, during a farewell function hosted by the Governor for the High Commissioner in Kokopo, Rabaul, on 5 May 2007.

The Solomon Islands High Commissioner was in Kokopo, Rabaul last weekend visiting the Solomon Islands students and community studying and living in East New Britain Province.

In presenting the cheque, Governor Leo Dion conveyed his Province's sincere condolences and sympathy to the Government and people of Solomon Islands for the destructions caused by the recent Tsunami, which has resulted in a number of lives being lost and property damaged and destroyed.

He said East New Britain also suffered from disasters such as the volcanic eruption in Rabaul but still found time to assist a neighbouring country, Solomon Islands.

In accepting the cheque, Solomon Islands High Commissioner to Papua New Guinea, HE Mr Bernard Bata'anisia, thanked the Governor of East New Britain, Hon Leo Dion, the Provincial Government and people of East New Britain for the valuable assistance.

The High Commissioner added that the assistance would go along way in helping those who have suffered from the Tsunami disaster in Solomon Islands.
