MAKIRA EARTHQUAKE AND TSUNAMI

Purpose: To brief Development Partners and Stakeholders on the current situation of the extent of damages caused by the 7.8 magnitude earthquake and tsunami that affected parts of Makira, Small Malaita and Guadalcanal on 9th December 2016. And the Humanitarian Assistance from the Government and its Disaster Management Stakeholders and Partners.

Disaster Management and Coordination:

  • NEOC and N-DOC Committees support to Makira, Malaita and Guadalcanal Provinces in leading the Disaster Response Operations on-going. However, now that the PEOCs are capacitated and functioning, the NEOC will scale down the level of its activation to “Standby Activation Mode” as of today Wednesday 14th December 2016).

  • N-DOC Committees including Health, Education, Protection, Infrastructure and Camp Management Inter-Sectoral Coordination Meeting on-going. It is understood that NGOs, Red Cross and In-country UN Agencies are providing specific support through the sectors under the relevant N-Doc Committees.

  • RSIPF (Police) support on Civil Military Coordination role through the NEOC/PEOC Operations Function Team on-going

  • In-country UNOCHA support to NDMO in Coordination maintained. Additional support specific to Assessment Analysis has been embedded into the NEOC Assessment Information Management Function Team with the arrival of OCHA expert yesterday Tuesday 13th December 2016.

  • World Food Programme in-country support to the NEOC Logistics Function Team maintained.

  • RedR Australia has deployed a Structural Engineers under DFAT support to assist the N-DODC Infrastructure Committee with the Detail Sector Assessment of the National Referral Hospital. The Engineer arrived yesterday Tuesday 13th December 2016.

  • Recovery Coordination Committee Chaired by Ministry of Development Planning and Aid Coordination planned meeting at 9:00am this morning 14th December 2016.

  • The third N-DOC Meeting is planned for 10:00am tomorrow (Thursday 15th Dec) with the Multi-Stakeholder Coordination meeting is planned for Monday next week.
