On 21 January, weeks after two earthquakes struck the Solomon Islands, the country suffered further damage from heavy rains brought by a tropical depression. The islands of Guadalcanal, Isabel, Makira and Malaita experienced heavy flooding.
Some assessments of damage have been completed and the Government with local partners is managing the response.
Initial assessments place the affected population at around 7 776 in East Honiara and 8 240 in Malaita. Further assessment in other areas is ongoing.
As of 9 February, there are no reports of destruction of health facilities due to the flood.
Safe water and sanitation issues are a paramount health concern. Access to clean water and good sanitation is poor in all areas affected by the flood. There is a significant risk to health for vulnerable populations such as children under five, pregnant and lactating women, the elderly and the chronically ill.
