Operational Updates

• In August, WFP provided in-kind food assistance to 22,700 people including 21,200 pregnant and lactating women and children aged 6-23 months under stunting prevention. In Addition, 1,000 people living with HIV/TB and 443 pregnant and lactating women and children aged 24-59 months were assisted under the targeted supplementary feeding activity.

• As part of WFPs new school meals programme and in support to the Government of Sierra Leone’s ‘Free Quality Education’ agenda, WFP led a study mission of government officials to the Brazil WFP Centre of Excellence against Hunger, focused on school feeding.
The delegation engaged in knowledge exchange activities with Brazilian officials and undertook a field trip to Salvador, Bahia state, to see first-hand the links between school meals and smallholder farming. The visit was organized by the WFP Brazilian Centre of Excellence, the Brazilian Cooperation Agency, and the Brazilian National Fund for the Development of Education, responsible for Brazil’s school feeding programme.

• In partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture, WFP launched a nation-wide food security monitoring system data collection exercise to bridge the current data gap in food insecurity in Sierra Leone. Critical for the establishment of a baseline, the data will be periodically monitored to determine the food security situation in the country and guide policy decision making.

• WFP facilitated a third Seasonal Livelihood Programming (SLP) consultative process in Tonkolili district bringing together local needs and experiences for the coordination, planning and development of multi-sectoral programmes and initiatives. Participants included local authorities and development partners, with the resulting report and calendars supporting district-level planning for resilience building programmes.
