Highlights

  • The Leone (SLe) continued to depreciate against the United States Dollar (USD) by 60 percent compared from September 2022 to September 2023, marking one of the steepest declines in domestic currency value Sierra against foreign currencies within West Africa.

  • The national headline inflation reached 50.94 percent and food inflation rose to 62.9 percent in August 2023.

  • The prices of a kilogram of imported and local rice increased by 7.8 percent and 8.7 percent respectively when compared with the previous quarter and increased by 41 percent and 40.8 percent respectively year on year.

  • The purchasing power of the average Sierra Leoneans continued to depreciate due to increase in prices of key staples. A daily labour wage purchases 1.7 kg of local rice compared to 1.8 kg during the same period last year.
