Guinea and Sierra Leone – Cholera crisis Situation Report No. 1
Attachments
Highlights
An outbreak of cholera in Guinea and Sierra Leone has led to more than 21,772 cases and 362 deaths since the beginning of the year. Over half of reported cases and fatalities occurred in August. In Sierra Leone, the epidemic is already the worst since 1995, and figures in Guinea may surpass the 2007 outbreak.
Reports seem to indicate a drop in new cases since the end of August, but the disease continues to spread geographically.
US$3.6 million in CERF funding for both countries has contributed to the early response. Donors have generously responded, especially in Sierra Leone.
Partners still require $5.2 million for the response.
