UNHCR supports the Government of Serbia in strengthening the national asylum system and advocates for the inclusion of forcibly displaced people in need of international protection, while identifying solutions for them.

UNHCR advocates with and supports national authorities to ensure effective access to citizenship and personal documents, particularly birth certificates and identity cards, for individuals at risk of statelessness.

Following advocacy and technical support from UNHCR, Serbia has taken important steps towards ensuring greater access to employment and personal documentation for refugees and asylum-seekers.

HIGHLIGHTS

Convention Travel Documents issued

Following the publication of the relevant by-law in November 2023, the issuance of Convention Travel Documents for those with international protection began in Serbia in February 2024. The first refugees are already using it to travel to the countries in the region, while one DAFI student obtained a Schengen visa for a study trip with his faculty colleagues.

UNHCR and SCRM further their cooperation

UNHCR and the Serbian Commissariat for Refugees and Migration (SCRM) signed a Letter of Understanding on strengthening cooperation and coordination of activities related to refugees and asylum-seekers. This aims to formalize the long-standing collaboration of the two organizations and further strengthen joint working
