Belgrade, 28th of July 2015 – The contract for the detailed Study on flood management in the Kolubara river-basin between United Nations Development Programme and Jaroslav Černi Water Institute was signed today in the press briefing room of the Serbian government.
The Study will indicate the variety of measures required for reducing risks from floods and potential infrastructural damages. It will also develop an integrated protection system for the threatened areas of the Kolubara basin.
The Study is a step forward to more efficient planning of flood protection in this basin, as well as to more focused efforts to protective measures for flood prevention.
This is part of a wider project dedicated to ‘’Increased resilience to Respond to Emergency Situations’’ financed by the Government of Japan and implemented by United Nations Development Programme in partnership with the Serbian Government Office for Reconstruction and Flood Relief.
On the occasion of the commencement of the Study on flood management in the Kolubara basin, representatives of media, local authorities and other stakeholders were addressed by Marko Blagojević, director of Government Office for Reconstruction and Flood Relief, Irena Vojačkova Sollorano, Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Programme, H.E. Mr. Juici Takahara, Ambassador of Japan to the Republic of Serbia, Veljko Dimitrijević, deputy director of Srbijavode and Milan Dimkić, director of Jaroslav Černji Water Institute.
They all agreed in their calls for a spirit of partnership to continue in adressing the issues related to disaster risk reduction in Serbia, and in particular, pointed out that efficient and quality conduct of this Study requires collaboration between many state institutions, including the Ministry of Construction, Traffic and Infrastructure, Ministry of Agriculture and Environmental Protection, Electric Power Company – Kolubara mines, Republic Hydrometeorological Service and 16 municipalities whose territory constitues the Kolubara basin.
