The situation is dramatic and in critical stage as the flood wave passes. In order to support the government efforts to alleviate the consequences of this natural disaster, the UN Country Team Serbia and Montenegro stands ready to assist the thousands of flood victims, stated the acting UN Resident Coordinator in Serbia and Montenegro, Mr. Dario Carminati.
In the course of the past week, the UN emergency agencies, in coordination with the Red Cross of Serbia and other NGOs, already dispatched packages of emergency humanitarian assistance for children and displaced in the most affected areas. These consisted of emergency food rations, beds, mattresses, blankets, tents as well as hygiene parcels and school equipment for children.
Preventing the loss of life and providing emergency assistance to the most needy through the coordination mechanisms with the Serbian Government are, at present, the immediate priorities for the UN Country Team. In that regard, the UN Country Team joins the call of the Serbian Government for concerted international assistance for the people and the areas affected by the catastrophic floods.
At the same time, the UN Country Team advocates joint and coordinated approach of national and international efforts which, once the flooding waters recede, will have to rebuild the devastated areas, rehabilitate the economy and ultimately bring back the life to this part of the country.
