WASHINGTON, May 19, 2014 – The Defense Department will ship 26 tons of humanitarian relief to the people of Bosnia and Herzegovina as early as tomorrow following severe flooding in the Balkans, Pentagon spokesman Army Col. Steve Warren told reporters today.
The shipment is in response to requests for assistance following days of torrential rainfall.
Warren said essential goods are anticipated to begin arriving in Sarajevo tomorrow as part of the ongoing humanitarian effort.
Originating from Camp Darby in Livorno, Italy, the relief effort will involve shipments of more than 4,500 items, including:
-- Water purification units, water cans and kitchen equipment;
-- Sand bags and shovels;
-- Sleeping bags, blankets, sleeping mats and cots;
-- Generators and fuel; and
-- Wet weather gear and clothing.
Authorities in several Balkan nations have been evacuating residents left stranded by high water.
