PRISTINA, 23 November 1999 - On the occasion of International Human Rights Day, the OSCE Mission in Kosovo (OMIK) will hold a Kosovo International Human Rights Conference in Pristina on 10th and 11th December. It will be the first Human Rights conference and the first important international conference in more than ten years to be held in Kosovo. More than 500 guests from Kosovo and all over the world are invited and will take part in nine workshops conducted by international experts on human rights.

The workshops will deal with topics that are essential for Kosovo today, but also for other regions and countries in a post war situation: detainees and missing persons, democratic policing, post-conflict justice, protecting minorities, preventing torture, housing and property disputes, children's and women's rights, human rights institutions.

Opening statements will be given by the UN Special Representative Dr. Bernard Kouchner, the OSCE Head of Mission Ambassador Daan Everts and by internationally renowned keynote speakers. The program will be framed by a large variety of cultural events. Local and international NGO's will also present their activities in Kosovo.

Since the access to the Conference premises is limited (due to space and security considerations) and media interest is already considerable, we kindly request that you inform us as soon as possible if your organisation is interested in covering the event and how many representatives you intend to accredit to the Conference.

Please be aware that press representatives can attend the Conference only by accreditation!
