A core element of KFOR's peacekeeping mission in Kosovo is to support the population in the diverse area of humanitarian assistance. KFOR headquarters, each brigade and the battalions all have CIMIC (Civil Military Cooperation) officers who fulfil this role.
Their task is to be recognize the needs of the communities, in their area of responsibility, and to provide appropriate KFOR assistance where feasible. These officers cooperate closely with their counterparts in the UNMIK, the UNHCR, EU, OSCE and the various NGO's.
This week, in Multinational Brigade South, German KFOR peacekeepers are preparing to distribute medicine and food to vulnerable people, especially children in the region of Zur. Funds and supplies valued at DM 160,000 (approx. USD $80,000) were generously collected by the inhabitants of Marienberg, Germany.
In Brigade West, KFOR Italian troops delivered approximately 15,000 litres of fuel and oil to run the heating system in the local health centre and the water pumping station in Pec.
Road repairs are a major commitment for KFOR Military Engineers in all parts of Kosovo. Road works have already begun in MNB's Centre and West involving both military personnel and locally engaged workers.
