Italy - Returns of Kosovars

From IOM Press Briefing Notes 31 March 2000
Beginning in April, the IOM office in Rome, working with local partners, will register all Kosovars still in Italy. The information derived from this exercise will become part of a special database which will be used to assess their present and future willingness to return, taking into account that their Temporary Humanitarian Protection Status expires on 30 June 2000. The questionnaire will allow them to express the needs they foresee in relation to a safe and durable return and the reinsertion possibilities in their hometowns.

The results of this registration may lead the Ministry of Interior to consider a joint assessment mission with UNHCR and IOM to Kosovo to ascertain the possibility of safe local conditions for return and evaluate the financial package to be given to each returnee.

As part of its agreement with the Italian Government, IOM will continue to assist in the voluntary return of all displaced people from the Balkan area, including the Kosovars.
