INTRODUCTION

This project seeks to ensure the protection and welfare of refugees and asylum seekers in Rwanda. The Ministry of Disaster Management and Refugee (MIDIMAR) on behalf of the Government of Rwanda ensures the protection of refugees and asylum seekers. Over 80% of the refugees’ population is located in six refugee camps of Rwanda, while just under 20% of the population lives in the greater urban areas of Kigali and Huye.

Numbers of refugees in camps:

  • The total refugees in Rwanda are 170,985 including 161,958 refugees individually registered, 225 registered at reception centres , and 8,802 asylum seekers

  • 128,311 refugees are living in different Refugee Camps

  • Burundians refugees make up 52 % of the total refugee in Rwanda

  • Children make up 50.4% for all refugee people

  • The women and children are 78%

  • The average family size is 3 individual / family
