DHA-INFORMATION REPORT NO. 1
23 SEPTEMBER 1994

1. ON 19 SEPTEMBER, FOLLOWING THREE DAYS OF TORRENTIAL RAIN, SEVERE FLOODS AFFECTED THE REGION OF PRIMORSKIJ IN THE FAR EAST OF THE COUNTRY NOT FAR FROM VLADIVOSTOK. MOST AFFECTED ARE THE DISTRICTS OF NAKHODKA AND USSURISK.

2. EMERCOM OF RUSSIA REPORTS THAT 45,000 HECTARES ARE FLOODED, WITH WATER LEVEL IN RIVERS STILL RISING. 86 VILLAGES HAVE BEEN AFFECTED WITH 3 PERSONS REPORTED DEAD AND 15 MISSING. 529 PEOPLE WERE RESETTLED. WATER SUPPLY TO THE TOWN OF NAKHODKA HAVE BEEN CUT.

3. AS OF 22 SEPTEMBER THE DAMAGE WAS ESTIMATED AT USD 200 MILLION, WHICH INCLUDE PARTIAL OR TOTAL DESTRUCTION OF 808 KM OF ROADS, 104 BRIDGES, 64 KM OF POWER LINES, 40 KM OF COMMUNICATIONS LINES AND 44 HYDROTECHNICAL STATIONS.

4. EMERCOM UNITS HAVE BEEN DISPATCHED TO THE AFFECTED REGION AND GOVERNMENT HAS TAKEN ALL EMERGENCY MEASURES TO COPE WITH THIS NATURAL DISASTER.
