Highlight
Today, on 10 June, UNHCR is publishing 100th issue of these weekly updates. Since the onset of the war in Ukraine, UNHCR in Romania has published regular updates on the refugee situation in Romania and its response thereto. While in the beginning the updates were published on bi-weekly basis, since July 2022 they are published every week uninterruptedly and circulated among relevant actors, including authorities, donors and partners. These updates are intended to provide information on the refugee situation in Romania and on UNHCR and is partners’ response. UNHCR will continue providing all relevant partners with latest developments of the refugee situation in Romania.
Response
In order to better serve refugees in Romania, UNHCR organized an all-staff workshop last week focusing on matters relevant to all staff. The workshop it aimed at enhancing synergies among different units and Field Offices and Field Units in implementing UNHCR’s multi-year strategy for 2024-2026. During the sessions, the staff members engaged in various exercises that helped them gain a better understanding on the core UN values and principles, staff rules and regulations, the importance of ensuring staff well-being, and improving communication and coordination within the teams to enhance efficiency in serving the refugees.
UNHCR and the Department for Emergency Situations (DSU) are jointly carrying out site monitoring and assessments of the collective accommodation centres to further define the needs of these centres to ensure short and sustainable mid-term response to the most vulnerable refugees. So far, 15 collective accommodation centres have been identified in the cities at the border areas and cities where large number of refugees are residing. In parallel, UNHCR is coordinating a technical working group that has produced a briefing note that encompasses the current situation of the collective accommodation centres, relevant legal and administrative challenges, and provides a set of recommendations.
On 3 June, UNHCR met with the refugee community leaders in Galati to discuss the livelihood opportunities provided by UNHCR's partner “Jobs for Ukraine”. The leaders shared that refugees residing in Tulcea have a strong interest in these activities and expressed a desire to participate in the upcoming online sessions.
Last week, UNHCR and partners distributed over 400 core relief items (CRIs), including clothes and hygiene items to 136 refugee families from Ukraine hosted in Constanta, Cluj and Suceava. So far in 2024, UNHCR has distributed nearly 43,000 CRIs to 24,000 refugees from Ukraine across Romania.
In addition to the five enrolment centres in Bucharest, Constanta, Brasov, Suceava, and Galati, UNHCR’s mobile enrolment teams have conducted 13 missions to enroll refugees from Ukraine hosted in various counties across Romania to provide cash assistance. So far in 2024, a total of 10,257 refugees have been enrolled, including 7,248 individuals for the cash assistance for the refugees with specific needs.
