Heavy rains trigger deadly flooding in Romania

BUCHAREST, Aug 28, 2004 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- Torrential rains swept Romania's eastern and southeastern regions over the past two days, causing heavy losses, but so far there have been no reports of casualties.

TV images showed water as high as over one meter in many places and thousands of hectares of farmland and crops were destroyed. Strong winds uprooted trees and electricity poles, leading to a power cut in some villages.

Constanta, a port city in southeastern Romania, was the worst hit with three derricks blown down by wind and three vessels swept away from the port. The Constanta authorities had to seek support from the military to deal with the situation.

The climate in Romania has changed obviously in recent years, with a sharp increase in disastrous storms.
