Heavy rains at the beginning of July have lead to floods affecting 75% of Romania.. 22 people have died and more than 14,700 houses severly damaged by water that also swamped nearly 94,000 hectares of farmland. Over 12 000 people have been evacuated.
Vrancea county is one of the most affected areas with 15 schools and kindergartens from 10 villages having been seriously damaged and one school completely destroyed.
Save the Children's response
1,500 children are registered in the schools and kindergartens seriously damaged by floods from the 10 villages in the Vrancea county:
The schools they are attending should be renovated and fully equipped before the start of the school year.
Several thousand other children living in these areas need water purification, clothes, hygiene materials, food, mineral water etc...
Save the Children Romania will ask the authorities to make an urgent assessment of the children's family situation, where they live (with relatives etc.) in order to prevent possible cases of selling, trafficking in children etc.
