Emergency aid to Romania for flood disaster

The Government of Japan has decided to provide emergency assistance in kind (tents, water purifiers and electric generators) worth about 13 million yen to Romania, which sustained a major flood disaster.

1. In Romania, a series of torrential rains caused severe flooding. According to some reports, 21 persons died, about 14,000 persons took refuge, more than 10,000 houses were inundated, and such infrastructure as farmland, roads and railroads suffered damage. As the disaster-afflicted people are forced to be in harsh conditions as refugees in wide-ranging areas, the Government of Romania requested emergency aid from the international community, while engaging in self-help efforts for restoration.

2. The Government of Japan has decided to extend this emergency aid for the disaster-afflicted from the humanitarian viewpoint and taking account of the friendly relations between Japan and Romania.
