Réunion - Tropical Cyclone GARANCE, update (GDACS, COGIC, Meteo France La Reunion, Copernicus EMSR) (ECHO Daily Flash of 04 March 2025)

  • Following the passage of tropical cyclone GARANCE on 28 February over Réunion, which brought heavy rain and strong winds, the humanitarian impact is increasing. The Copernicus Emergency Management Service recorded flood and landslide events, particularly across the northern part of the island.
  • According to the Inter-ministerial Crisis Management Operational Centre (COGIC), five people died and six others were injured (three were severely injured). Additionally, 60,000 houses are still without electricity while 5% of the population, mainly in Saint-Benoit town, do not have access to running water and 23% is affected by water sully issues.
  • National authorities continue to conduct the emergency operations, 40 generators are being sent to the island to compensate for the electricity shortages.
  • Copernicus Emergency Management Service was activated (EMSR790) on 27 February and two maps have been produced so far.
  • For the next 48 hours, drier conditions are expected across Réunion.
