UNHCR supports the authorities in responding to the protection needs of forcibly displaced and stateless people in the country through a ‘whole-of-society’ approach.
North Macedonia is in the process of resolving all known cases of statelessness, in line with the #IBelong Campaign, SDG 16.9, and its Global Refugee Forum pledge towards ending statelessness.
UNHCR is working with partners and the government to develop an integration infrastructure for refugees, asylum-seekers and other forcibly displaced people in North Macedonia.
HIGHLIGHTS
Durable Solutions
In December2 023, amendments to the Law on Foreigners were adopted by the Parliament to secure durable solutions for the remaining Kosovo refugees in North Macedonia.
Statelessness
By January 2024, 511 of 786 known stateless persons acquired their first ID cards, with the remaining 275 being in the procedure for issuing documentation.
Mixed Movements
UNHCR signed an Action Plan for cooperation with Basic Court Gevgelija aimed at addressing the gaps in relation to the treatment of people arriving as part of mixed movements to North Macedonia.
