North Macedonia - Wildfires (Government of the Republic of North Macedonia, Greek Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, JRC EFFIS, media) (ECHO Daily Flash of 10 July 2025)

  • Several wildfires are burning across the Republic of North Macedonia, including around the capital Skopje and the village of Nikolits, in Doiran municipality near the Greek border, resulting in destruction and stay-home-orders.
  • According to the Civil Protection authorities, as of 10 of July at 07.00, there were a total of 63 wildfires, of which nine are still active, four are under control, one is localised, and 49 have been extinguished.
  • On 9 July, the Republic of North Macedonia activated the Union Civil Protection Mechanism (UCPM), requesting 5 firefighting aircraft (helicopters or airplanes) to supplement its existing firefighting efforts.
  • As a response, on the same day the Emergency Response Coordination Centre (ERCC) mobilised two rescEU airplanes hosted by Greece to deploy to the affected region, as a rapid intervention.
  • Over the next 48 hours, according to the JRC EFFIS, the fire danger forecast is expected to be from very high to extreme in Doiran municipality and the east of the country, and from high to very high for Skopje, Kicevo, and across the west of North Macedonia.
