South Korea - Floods and landslides update (DG ECHO partners, KMA, media) (ECHO Daily Flash of 18 July 2023)

  • Heavy rainfall has been affecting South Korea since 9 July, causing floods and landslides that have resulted in casualties and damage. As of 18 July, media reports indicate 49 deaths, with the highest number of 19 people dead in North Chungcheong Province.
  • About 6,200 households (10,500 individuals) have been evacuated from the affected areas. Initial estimation indicates damage to 628 public facilities and 317 other private properties, with 146 roads washed away by floods.
  • The country's military is engaged in the relief, rescue, and recovery operations. Korean Red Cross (KNRC) has launched emergency response for the floods and landslides.
  • The weather agency forecast heavy rains (up to 200 mm) in Chungcheong and the southern region today.
